How does this event work?

When you arrive, you’ll get a sticker to write your name, native language, and the languages you want to practice.
You can then join a table, meet other people, and start talking in a relaxed, informal way, moving between groups throughout the evening.
After the language exchange, the night continues with a music session, where anyone can perform, sing, or play in an open and free stage atmosphere.

FAQ

What is a language exchange?

The process is very simple. At the mayority of the exchanges, you will receive a stickers on whic you write down your name, your nativ language and the language (s) you would like to speak. You can search for people whose native languages corresponds to the languages you would like to practise. You can always ask our crew for help if you have difficulty finding another suitable participant. Durinf the few events that we do not work with stickers, our crew assigns the tables so everybody can join a suitable group of participants.  A few minutes later the event turns into a multilingual social gathering where you can meet international friends.

The exchange on Friday is a bit different. In umbracle at the entry you will receive a flag of your country /native tongue and you will search for a particpant who speaks the language you would like to practise. That way the diversity of our participants is shown through the flags.

What is the cost of the events?

Most of the events are free of cost except from our events on Fridays because we organise specials events, such as painting and ceramic classes. Those events requiere some costs for the materials provided by VLE.

What is the difference between the language exchanges on weekdays?

Description of every exchange:
We recommend every exchange but one can suit you more than others. It can depend on your interests, the areayou live in or where you like to gather with friends.
We will explain the main differences between our exchanges:

  • We recommend the exchange on Monday if you like a calm atmosphere and if you live near the university quarter (Blasco Ibañez). On a busy day, around 80-100 people participate.
  • On Tuesday people of every age (from 18 – 70) participate in our exchange. You can practise and speak different language and  talking about various topics. On a busy day there are around 120-150 participants present at the exchange. The events offers a unique opportunity to netwerk.
  • Wednesday combines a language exchange and salsa and bachata classes. First, we organise the language exchange which takes about an hour. Afterwards the classes for beginners start. Everybody can participate cause the instructor will explain the basics. At the end of the event, the professional dancers can conquer the dancefloor.
  • The exchange on Thursday is popular amongst local students, Erasmus and exchange students who like to practise and learn eachothers languages. The event is known for its quiz which covers various topics. The quiz entails 20 questions and every correct answer is rewarded with a shot. We recommend the event to students. About 140 people participate in this event.
  • On Friday, we organise the flag Tandem + Party in Umbracle/Mya. An interactive Language Exchange during which everybody receives the flag of his/her native language and search for participants with whom they would like to talk. In winter about 150 – 180 people participate and in summer around 400 – 600 participants are present. Entry is free until 00:30. Afterwards you can stay at Umbracle/Mya until you would like.

Which languages are spoken during the exchanges?

All the languages can be spoken during our languages exchanges.
Usually there is a great amount of participants who speak English, French, German, Italian and Spanish. Sometimes other languages can be spoken if both native speakers and language learners are present during the exchange. At some exchanges, there are for example participants who speak Portuguese, Russian, Chinese etc. On Fridays all languages and nationalities are present. They can be recognised by their flags during the Flag Tandem Party at Mya/Umbracle.

Do the exchanges require a certain level of proficiency

Everybody is welcome at our exchanges. We don’t divide people into groups according to their proficiency. Proficiency is not a determinant factor during the learning process of foreign languages. If you like practising learning and speaking in various languages, our events are the place to be. Everybody, from native speakers to beginners, is welcome.

How do I register for the events?

You go to our site valencialanguageexchange.com and chose a date that suits you in the calender. You fill in the form of the event and you are ready to participate. Not all our events require registration.
