CULLA
Medieval Spain can be best represented by Culla which is in the list of top 15 most beautiful villages of Spain (selected by Pueblos más Bonitos de España). Its old town was declared as a Site of Cultural Interest featuring various restored buildings, streets, alleys, churches, plazas and the ruins of the castle all fulfilled with history and tradition.
Culla stands out by its unique geography and sharp contrasts resulted by elevation of the city which ranges from the 395 m to the 1,121 m of the town center. The city is characterized by steep slopes, deep ravines, caves and potholes.
Origins and history: as evidenced by archaeological remains and cave paintings, Culla existed since prehistoric times. The city has an Arab foundation, but because of the important strategic role of the fortress (Castillo de Culla) it was sold to the Knights Templar in 14th century. During the wars in the 19th century the spectacular castle was destroyed, leaving just the structure of what makes up the town today.
Feel the history behind the walls of Culla!
SAGUNTO CASTLE
Sagunto castle is one of the oldest and most impressive castles in Valencian community that was declared a National Monument in 1931. From the top of the castle you can enjoy wonderful panoramic views of the city and the coast. The fortress was the witness of numerous historical events in the past 2000 years, including Iberian, Roman, Gothic, Muslim and Medieval times.
History: the castle during the Islamic period is poorly studied, with Sagunto being overshadowed by Valencia at that time. Sagunto Castle was used as a fortress by the Muslims to defend the region, later it was occupied by El Cid and taken by Christian king James I who incorporated it into the Kingdom of Valencia. Sagunto was diverse in nationalities and religions, apart the majority of Muslims and Christians by the early 14th century Sagunto had a growing Jewish population, resulting in the establishment of a Jewish tombs under the castle walls.
