Discover the Forat de Bernia: An Unmissable Hiking Adventure in Alicante

This time, we are heading to the Forat de Bernia, a spectacular hiking route around the Serra de Bèrnia. It is undoubtedly one of the most complete trails with the best views of Alicante’s geography. This passage, or natural tunnel, allows you to cross a mountain in the Sierra de Bernia, which extends about 11 km from west to east, perpendicular to the Mediterranean coast.

Distance: 11.43km (circular route)
Elevation gain: 634m
Difficulty: medium (You have to be physically fit and requires apropiate footwear and sun protection)
El Forat, a natural tunnel, will be our gateway through the mountains. You’ll also encounter the Fort de Bèrnia, a jewel of our cultural heritage dating back to the 16th century, along with the impressive panoramic views of the surrounding mountain ranges and the nearby Mediterranean Sea. All these factors, combined with an affordable level of difficulty, make this excursion one of the most important ones in our province.
Historical Significance of Fort Bernia
Fort Bernia was constructed during the reign of Philip II of Spain to suppress the Moorish uprisings, which were commonplace in these mountains. However, after the Moors left, Fort Bèrnia was abandoned.
On this same route, very close to El Forat de Bernia, you can see some small cave paintings or visit the remains of the Castle of Bernia (also known as Fort of Bernia), which is nestled between the cliffs and at the foot of the ridges of the Sierra de Bernia.
