PORTO:
One of the most famous tourist cities in Portugal is undoubtedly Porto. Among its attractions is its beautiful Clérigos Tower, which offers a unique view of the city. Porto is known for its famous wine. Two of the most famous neighbourhoods are La Ribiera and Barrio Do Barredo. If you are interested in history, you will also find different churches and monasteries from past centuries. One of the favourite places for many tourists in Porto is the district of old buildings where you can find balconies with clothes hanging out and many local shops. This district with many local residents represents the authenticity and soul of Porto.
COIMBRA:
Located to the south of Porto we can find a beautiful university city that stands out for its historical core and its interesting cultural heritage. Besides being known for being a university city, we can also see several older buildings and churches and beautiful gardens. The Botanical Garden is one of the must-see gardens in Coimbra. It was founded in 1773 in a green wooded area. With its colours, it contributes to the contrast of the historical centre and numerous buildings. Thus, this city offers something for everyone. The New Cathedral of Coimbra was built between 1598 and 1698 and is one of the things you should visit when you are in this city. This church was built in two different styles such as mannerist and baroque. You should definitely not miss the entrance to the cathedral itself where you can see all the splendour of these styles.
FATIMA
Fatima is a small town in Portugal located in the centre of the country. Although it has only about 10,000 inhabitants, it is one of the most famous tourist destinations in Europe. Fatima’s economy is based almost exclusively on religious tourism due to the large number of tourists who go there for the apparitions of the Virgin Mary to the three shepherds. In the town you can find different souvenir shops that mainly offer and represent religious articles. However, although Fatima is known for religious tourism and pilgrimages, the tourist offer is not limited to that type of tourism. Within the city itself you can find a lot of city services, such as hotels and restaurants and other places of historical interest.
LISBON:
If you want to make the most of your time in the capital of Portugal, you must visit these wonderful places. Lisbon is known as the city of light and is one of the most popular cities in Europe. Lisbon offers many monuments and historical buildings that will take your breath away. In addition, you will be able to enjoy amazing viewpoints. You should try its fantastic gastronomy. One of the most beautiful viewpoints is Portas de Sol. Except for a good view, there you have tables and chairs where you can have breakfast. Don’t miss the opportunity to try their delicious Belém cakes. As for its historical and cultural heritage, the Castle of Saint George is not to be missed. It is a 5th century castle and there you can learn about the interesting history of the castle and the city in general. A characteristic feature of Lisbon and something you should not miss on your visit to this city is the historic yellow tram. Don’t miss this route.
SINTRA:
Not so far from Lisbon (about 25 kilometres) is the beautiful Portuguese town of Sintra. This town is special and recognisable by its Palacio da Pena, which was one of the most famous places in Europe. It was the residence of the Portuguese kings during the 19th century. This palace is located on the highest hill of the city. This palace will impress you from the outside as well as from the inside. It has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Sintra is one of the most romantic cities in Europe precisely because of its fairytale palaces and beautiful gardens. In addition to visiting the main palaces and castles, you can visit the Natural Park that surrounds the town and take a walking tour through it. There you can see several small lakes and ponds.
CABO DE ROCA:
Cabo da Roca is the westernmost point of Europe and Portugal, the 144-metre high cape is today a popular tourist destination, on the cape’s plateau there is a stone obelisk with a tombstone inscribed with geographical coordinates, an 18th century lighthouse and a souvenir shop.
