nestled in the Comunidad Autónoma of Valencia in southeastern Spain, is a captivating historic town celebrated for its vibrant Moors and Christians fiesta, delightful cuisine, and stunning natural beauty. Known as the city of bridges, Alcoi offers sweeping views from its many bridges, framing the surrounding mountains and landscapes. Among its natural highlights are the Carrascal de la Font Roja Natural Park and the Sierra de Mariola mountain range, famous for its aromatic plants.
At the heart of Alcoi lies Plaza de España, the town’s main square, surrounded by historic sites and charming attractions. In the medieval quarter, you can explore landmarks such as the old City Hall, the Archaeological Museum, and the Museum of the Festivities of Moors and Christians. A stroll up San Nicolás street leads to the town’s Modernist quarter, showcasing a unique architectural style.
Alcoi is also the birthplace of Serpis olives, a celebrated delicacy in Spanish tapas.
Xàtiva, a historic town in eastern Spain’s Valencia province, is just 25 km from the Mediterranean Sea. Known for its deep-rooted heritage, Xàtiva became one of Europe’s earliest centers for paper manufacturing in the 12th century when Arabs introduced papermaking technology to the region. This innovation contributed to Xàtiva’s reputation as a center for learning and culture, marking it as an influential city in Spain’s medieval history.
After the Christian repopulation, the city became the cradle of one of the most powerful families of the Renaissance – the House of Borgia, which produced Popes like Callixtus III (Alfonso de Borgia) and Alexander VI (Rodrigo de Borgia).
The city is best known for its unique castle which is located between two peaks. Thanks to its strategic location on the Sierra del Castell hill, this fortress has been the scene and spectator of a lot of battles. The castle forms the highest point of the defensive walls that once encircled early medieval Xàtiva. Despite its Iberian and Roman roots, most of the castle walls and towers preserved today are of Islamic or Gothic origin. More information: https://xativaturismo.com/en/xativa-castle/
