The amazing pink salt lake is located in the south of the Costa Blanca, next to the city of Torrevieja (Alicante, Spain), with an area of 1400 hectares. As part of the Las Salinas de Torrevieja nature reserve, this unique pink-hued lake is one of Spain’s most intriguing attractions. The lake’s striking pink color is a result of pigments produced by Halobacterium bacteria and Dunaliella salina micro-algae, which thrive in its high-salinity waters. This vibrant ecosystem is not just visually stunning but also vital to the local wildlife. Tiny invertebrate crustaceans feed on the algae, absorbing the pink pigments and, in turn, becoming a key food source for the region’s famous flamingos, which owe their iconic pink plumage to this diet.
