This municipality, with deep-rooted Muslim origins, is also known for its locally produced water. The town center is situated on the slope of a hill called Punta de la Sartén, where you can still see the ruins of a Muslim fortress that once served as a watchtower.
The San José Caves are in fact an underground river flowing for 2.5km under beautiful rocky formations. With a temperature of +20 degrees, the river of San José is considered the longest navigable underground river in Europe.
The Caves which sometimes are called “the heart of the earth” are full of stalactites and stalagmites that you will see during the boat ride as well as some cave drawings left centuries ago. After some reconstructions and light installation in 1920’s the route became more open to tourists and much safer. A unique place to visit for sure!
